NOTE:

Use of sand for media is not recommended due to it being difficult to properly backwash when using in a fish pond application. When sand is used as a filtering media for swimming pools, it remains free of bacteria because of the regular use of chlorine or bromine to keep it clean. When sand is used for filtering ponds, the beneficial bacteria coats the sand and traps waste so well, that it is impossible to clean very well during back washing. In a mater of months, the water starts to travel through channels in the sand keeping the filter from properly working. The water flow is impacted and slows leading to pore water quality.

Most bead filters manufacturers use sand filter bodies and convert the internal plumbing to handle floating media. With the Carefree filters above, you are able to use sinking media. Getting the sinking media to perform well during backwashes requires a two speed pump or a blower unit to tumble the media to aid in breaking up the crud for cleaning.

The blower unit would mount on a T fitting that is on the inlet side going into the filter. In order to force the blower air into the filter requires a check valve to be mounted between the pump and the T fitting going to the blower. Be sure to mount the blower over a ball valve to prevent the water from going up into the blower unit during normal operation.

The procedure to perform a backwash using a blower would be as follows:

1) Turn off pump
2) Turn valve to "Backwash"
3) Open ball valve mounted below the blower
4) Turn on blower for 30 to 60 seconds
5) Turn off blower
6) Close ball valve mounted below the blower
7) Turn on pump for 30 seconds or until waste water clears up
8) Turn off pump
9) Turn valve to "Rinse"
10) Turn on pump for 30 seconds or until waste water clears up
11) Turn valve back to "Filter"

Flow through media can experience plugging up if the flow rate is too slow or regular weekly backwash maintenance is not performed. If you see signs of pore water quality, consider back washing 2 or 3 times more often until you see clarity restored. Then adjust the backwash schedule as needed to maintain.

Top-mount sand filters are designed for extra sand holding capacity and make an ideal setup for making your own biological filter when using sinking media in place of the sand. The Carefree filter body is made of corrosion-proof polymeric thermoplastic. Consider using a 2 speed pump to aid during backwash or install a check valve then a blower unit on the inlet side to perform the weekly back washing maintenance.
